About MULAN, How Is the Mold Made? User Manual | MULAN

April 11, 2023

Injection moulding is a manufacturing process that is widely used for producing plastic parts. The process involves injecting molten plastic into a mould, which is then cooled and solidified to form the desired shape. The mould used in this process is a critical component that determines the quality of the final product. Therefore, it is essential to ensure that the mould is of high quality, precise, and durable. This is where injection moulding tools come into play.

Injection moulding tools, also known as moulds, are the devices used to shape the molten plastic into the desired shape. The tools are created using a combination of computer-aided design (CAD) software, machining processes, and manual labour. In general, injection moulding tools can be divided into two categories: prototype tools and production tools.

Prototype Tools: The purpose of prototype tools is to create a sample or prototype of the final product before starting the mass production process. These tools are usually created using lower-cost materials such as aluminium or a softer steel. The process of creating prototype tools is relatively quick, and changes can be made to the tooling quickly to modify the product as required. The process of creating prototype tools usually involves the following steps:

Design: The first step in creating a prototype tool is to create a 3D model of the product using CAD software. This model is then used to create a design for the mould.

Machining: Once the design is complete, it is transferred to a CNC machine that can create the mould. The machine cuts the material into the shape required for the mould.

Assembly: The machined parts are then assembled and finished by hand. This process involves smoothing rough edges and polishing the mould to ensure the final product is of high quality.

Production Tools: Production tools are used in the mass production process and are designed to be more robust and durable than prototype tools. These tools are made from high-quality steel and are capable of producing thousands and millions of products
